Half Term Recruitment
14th Oct 2011 by Nev Keating
How did you spend the May half term? For many companies this is a time to take a quick break before the last part of the session. Not so for the officers and boys from the 1st Wallingford Company.
The company took the opportunity to throw open its doors and welcome young people from the local school. 30 young people in 2 groups spent a two and a half hour session doing BB activities, including painting a giant picture, making fridge magnets, space hopper and sack racing, David and Goliath and an attempt at the Boys' Brigade Orienteering course.
The day was held in the school grounds and funded by the local Council as part of their Positive Activities Programme. The Council even paid for some new equipment to be used on the day.
Three days later members of the public were challenged to attempt the BB Orienteering course, about 50 local people took up the challenge. A prize was awarded to the person who completed the course in the fastest time. The prize went to Callum a member of the local Scout group who sprinted round the course in just 29 minutes (the average time taken was an hour and a half). Callum who is a regular Orienteer was asked to rate the course and stated Its better than the Scout course at Youlbury (Oxford) as the although the course is flat and open the controls are smaller and better placed.
